Rena Kyriakou (1917-1994): Composer, Pianist, Woman

The career of Greek pianist and composer, Rena Kyriakou (1917-1994), exemplifies the obstacles placed before foreign-trained women musicians who aspired to be taken seriously as composers in twentieth-century Greece. By all accounts Kyriakou was a remarkable musician who demonstrated an early talent for both composing and playing the piano. Nevertheless, by her late twenties she decided to forego her promising future as a composer and instead limit herself to the career of a performing virtuoso.
